Since being “created” in the early 90s, this treatment has become increasingly popular amongst women and men alike. While it was originally only available for a wealthier clientele, thanks to the advancements of filler and its growing accessibility, it has skyrocketed for the “average” public’s use.

While there are several options available for filler, the procedure is most commonly performed with hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers. At Plastic Surgery Scottsdale, we offer the full line of JUVEDERM products, specifically Juvederm Ultra XC and Juvederm Volbella XC for non-surgical lip augmentation.

What’s the First Step?

When you come in for your appointment with Dr. Alexander Golger, you will be able to ask all of your questions related to the treatment and have a better understanding of how the treatment works. He will evaluate your lips and ask about your medical history. It is very important to be completely open and honest when discussing these matters as it helps avoid any unnecessary risks or complications.

After you and Dr. Golger decide on the appropriate lip filler and the direction of your treatment, he will create your treatment plan. Once you are happy with the plan, you will be able to receive your treatment immediately after your consultation, but if you’d prefer a different time, our Patient Coordinator will be able to help you schedule your appointment.

What to Expect on the Day of Lip Fillers

When you’re ready for your Lip Filler treatment, we will first make you comfortable in our reclining chair. Next, we will apply a topical anesthetic to your lips to prevent any pain and make your experience as comfortable as possible. Please keep in mind that while the treatment is rather quick, it will take about 15 to 30 minutes for your lips to become fully numb.

Dr. Golger will then use a thin needle to inject the lip filler into your lips at strategic locations, which can include the edges of your lips (vermillion border), the corners of your mouth, and your Cupid’s Bow, which is the curve in the center of your upper lip. While you shouldn’t feel any pain, many patients have expressed there is a pinching sensation, that can cause eyes to water. After evaluating the results and deciding that enough filler has been used, your injector will end the session by gently massaging your lips. This action helps the filler to be naturally distributed.

We will keep you for about 15 minutes to ensure you don’t experience any side effects, such as dizziness, nausea, or substantial bleeding. During this time, we will provide you with an ice pack for your lips to minimize swelling and bruising.

Lip Fillers Recovery

You will be able to leave and return to your daily routine once your Lip Filler is complete. You will likely experience some swelling and bruising that lasts a few days, so we advise our patients to plan if they are attending an event or function, this way, your lips will have a more natural look. Applying ice or cold compresses to the treated area can help reduce this swelling.

You will need at least one week for the filler to settle into its final position and for the swelling to subside. You will also need to avoid strenuous physical activity, excessive heat, and sun exposure for a few days after your treatment. Drink plenty of water to keep your lips well-hydrated and moisturized, and refrain from rubbing/ massaging the treated area, pursing your lips (i.e. kissing, sipping from a straw, etc.), and please be extra careful when brushing your teeth.
